Hole Opener

Hole Opener

Wellbore Enlargement Tool

Introduction

The Hole Opener enlarges the wellbore behind a pilot hole, with three pairs of staged cutters delivering six-point contact for a stable, full-gauge hole.

Available in fixed diameters from 23" to 42" and manufactured from high-quality AISI 4145 H-MOD steel meeting NS-1, DS1 Cat 3-5, and API, it's fitted as standard with mill tooth roller cones for soft to medium formations, enhanced to mitigate boulder interference.

Stability comes by design: staged cutter pairs contact the hole at six points, with a full gauge pilot blade increasing stability further. Custom designs and TCI cutters are available to client request.

How It Works

Staged Cutting, Stable Running

Opening a large-diameter hole puts enormous demands on a single tool, the cutting structure must enlarge the bore evenly while staying centered, in formations that can throw boulders at it.

The full gauge pilot blade rides the pilot hole to keep the tool centered, while three pairs of staged cutters share the enlargement. Each pair is taking its stage of the cut rather than one structure taking it all. Six-point hole contact stabilizes the tool through the cut, upward-facing nozzles direct flow toward the cutters, and sealed roller bearings carry the load in every cone.

The result is a stable, full-gauge enlarged hole, cut evenly from pilot diameter to as much as 42".
